good business advice

Essays vs. Books

Essays vs. Books

I prefer essays to business books.

Here’s why:

Business books offer great advice (and I’ve read many) – but the problem with advice is that it’s context-dependent.

It’s good for you if it matches your context 100%, which is rare.

So you need to learn to do first principles thinking where you must go beyond your cognitive biases to think from scratch.

That’s why I find it better to read, for example, a Ted Hughes’ essay on power and accuracy to learn about our mental filters and how to assess a situation.

It allows me to apply the lessons from the business books to my situation.
